Internet safety measures agreed

The European Parliament has voted to approve a package of measures designed to protect children from danger on the internet.

The bill calls for a "child safe" label for websites as well as hotlines in the 27 EU nations for the reporting of illegal content.

The European Union's assembly says children and parents are often unaware of the dangers posed by child pornography, violent sites, bullying or grooming over the internet

Under the plan, the EU will set aside 55 million euros(£43 million) over the next five years to improve web safety for children. The programme aims to raise public awareness of the problems through information campaigns and to develop filters to block harmful content.
