UK kids 'Internet savvy'

British children are becoming very internet savvy, according to industry experts, with the average UK child spending 43.5 hours a month online.

However, parents estimate that their children are only spending 18.8 hours online, according to the Norton Online Report.

Plenty of children in the UK rush straight to the computer to check their emails or go on social networking sites as soon as they get home in their schoolwear.

So it is good news that, out of the survey of 9,000 internet users worldwide, parents in the UK are more likely to set internet controls in order to ensure their child's safety online.

Marian Merritt, internet safety advocate of computer software company Symantec, said: "Having an open discussion with your children is something we really encourage.

"It's not about coming down hard on them when they encounter inappropriate content, as the internet is a great place to learn and to play, but there have to be boundaries. Kids in the UK are pretty internet savvy, and parents need to keep up."
